4 – Little Deadman’s Bay to Prion Beach

Approximate Walking Time: 3-4 hours

This looks more like it – an easy 9.4 km walk along a couple of sandy beaches and only a short hill over Menzies Bluff to contend with.

That we finish with a row boat across the New River Lagoon seemed ideal.

Onto Muddy Plains

We headed out along stony Little Deadman’s Bay and then over a small forested section onto a muddy plain.

The forest of Deadmans Bay

This would have been the muddiest day we’d have and we’d hardly had a sprinkle of rain on us so far.

Harry Sinclair makes a wrong decision!

There were the usual obstacles to get over including a small creek, some very muddy bits, and more.

More cool forest had us heading down to Deadman’s Bay – so named because, fittingly, a dead sailor was washed ashore many years ago.

A nice walk along the flat sand and across another small creek brings you to the exit off the beach and into the forest of Menzies Bluff.

This section includes a few ups and downs and some mud before you head down to Prion Beach.

Clean Up At Grotto Creek

Grotto Creek feeds into the beach right at the start and it’s here you’ll read signs telling you to wash all dirt off your gear – boots, tent pegs, etc – as you could be carrying soil-borne diseases into other parts of the area.

Brushes are supplied – they should be hanging off the sign.

It’s then a simple 5 km stroll along Prion Beach where you take a shortcut (about 2/3 of the way along the beach) across the beach to the boat crossing at New River Lagoon.

There’s a row boat on either side of the lagoon (with plenty of spare oars).

Crossing New River Lagoon

One of the benefits of having sons – you can get them to row the boats back!

How To Leave A Boat On Either Side

  • row one boat across to the other side,
  • tow the other boat back,
  • tie up one boat, then
  • row the boat back to the other side.

This way ensures there’s a boat left on both sides when you’re done.

The large campsite is just inside a very obvious opening in the scrub.

Water is available from a small creek north of the campsite, but it was of pretty poor quality when we were there.

I’d certainly suggest filling up water bottles at Grotto Creek at the start of Prion Beach.

Difficulty Rating: Piece of Cake

Easy beach walking with a couple of challenging muddy sections, small hills and forest.
